Help build the Indianapolis Music Cooperative: a centralized, 24/7 music space for rehearsal, recording, and creating music

Donate

It takes a community to make an artist. Prior to being discovered and topping the charts, Ed Sheeran was homeless - The Beatles faced industry rejection until they gained a following. Barriers to success abound, and without access to needed resources and a strong, viable community, many artists will never achieve their potential.

The Indianapolis Music Cooperative (IMC) will eliminate those barriers by providing affordable recording, rehearsal and community spaces supported by a strong community, online tools, and engagement. The IMC will utilize a shared space model enabled by Soundspace technology, with monthly members sharing 24/7 access to equipment, spaces, and unique digital resources. Our communal approach will foster stronger creative networks, provide cost-effective alternatives to traditional studio and rehearsal resources through volume, and create more opportunity for success in a modern music marketplace.

  • Empowering the artists through industrial innovation

The Details

These facilities provide much needed, in demand resources to the music community of Indianapolis. An affordable monthly membership will grant access to 24/7 rehearsal, recording, and production spaces.

What Your Donation Does

The funds raised from this Crowdgranting campaign will go towards the initial buildout of the Indianapolis Music Cooperative at the Circle City Industrial Complex as described below:

A Community Space

As a community funded space, the IMC will engage with the Indianapolis Community by hosting daily, public access to its Commons Area from 3-8pm. *subject to member and community needs* Additionally, the IMC will host a variety of free, community events from live performances, networking opportunities, and educational workshops.

The IMC design includes four distinct areas of music creation:

  • Commons Area:

As a cooperative of non-profit businesses, the main contributions of each  member will be through peer-to-peer education, mentoring, or operations. The Commons Area provides a space where this inclusive programming can occur,  within the music scene. The area also provides functionality as a networking area with interactive music-oriented icebreakers such as a live music silent disco, video recording space for online public lessons, and a local music workshop gathering space to learn from industry professionals. Workshops and lessons produced here will be made available online to members.

  • Learning Rooms:

Learning rooms will be an extension of the commons area. These are meant to be utilized as a songwriting lounge, collaboration center, or a private space to workshop your ideas within the IMC. These will also be spaces where music professionals can set their own wages for mentoring, a freedom currently sought in the Indianapolis area.

  • Rehearsal Rooms:

Every band needs to practice, and nobody is catering to this need. By providing practice rooms, we allow for the growth of Indianapolis music without noise complaints from neighbors stifling creativity. These spaces are designed for an environment where noise pollution is not an issue and the client can play their instrument to its maximum potential and will be equipped with mixers, microphones and video cameras to capture and record the band rehearsal.

  • Recording Studios:

A membership model reduces the price of recording for the average musician by up to 85% hourly. With state-of-the-art technology and professional design, the studio will be the flagship creative space of the IMC.

Location: Circle City Industrial Complex

Musicians in Indianapolis want an easily accessible centralized building location, preferably within the I-465 circle which is accessible by public transit and has ample parking. With this in mind, the IMC has a negotiated ~10,000 sq. ft. contract with the Circle City Industrial Complex, at 1125 Brookside Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana, as part of the Eli Lilly grant to enhance the city of Indianapolis. Of the ~10,000 sq. ft., the IMC is ~6,000 sq. ft.. The remaining space is an all-ages 700 person venue space for live musical performance as a secondary revenue generation for the IMC. Innovative architectural design of the IMC will achieve the same level of sound isolation at one-third of the cost of other professional quotes.
