800 lb Gorilla Drops New Record!

If you haven't heard of 800lb Gorilla, do yourself a favor and check them out. They are a killer group of musicians that seamlessly meld together funk, jazz, pop, and dance elements and they're releasing a new record this Saturday (12/21) at the HiFi in Indianapolis. I had the opportunity to preview the record at their listening party at Square Cat Vinyl last weekend and I couldn't stop moving and grooving to it. The songs are tight, the mix is fantastic, the drums SMASH... a perfect blend of tapping into sophisticated musical elements and dirty grooves.

Mark Humphrey, Kwame Newton, and Andy Greenwell make up 800 lb. Gorilla, each bringing a unique set of influences to the group. “I personally draw a lot of influence from pop music these days, but in college I got a jazz degree so I can’t help but vibe with the Indy neo-soul/fusion movement,” says Greenwell. “I’m really pleased that I could be a part of this album, I think it showcases our best attributes as individuals in a tight and cohesive sound.” “The addition of Andy has allowed us to include more synthesizers and elements of electronic music and R&B in our songwriting, as well as expanding our ability to layer more vocal harmonies," remarks Newton. "Collaborating with other local musicians and artists on Metro Manila is intended as an homage to Indianapolis' vibrant and growing music and arts community."
